Materials

  • 1 x 100g ball of Chunky. Pictured is King Cole Drifter Chunky
  • A Pair of 5mm Knitting Needles
  • A Pair of 6mm Knitting Needles
  • Needle with Big Eye (for Sewing in Ends)

Instructions

  • Using 5mm needles and thumb method cast on 79 stitches.
  • 1st row K1 * p1, k1, rep from * to end.
  • 2nd row * P1, k1, rep from * to last st, p1.
  • These 2 rows are called 1 x 1 rib.
  • Work 11 rows more in 1 x 1 rib.
  • Next row rib 7, rib2tog, (rib 7, rib2tog) 7 times, rib 7. (71 sts)

Change to 6mm needles and work as follows: –

  • 1st row Knit
  • 2nd row Purl
  • Cont in stocking stitch (as above) until hat measures 6 ½ in, ending on a rs row.
  • Next row purl to end inc 2 sts evenly along across row (73sts)

Shape Crown

  • 1st row K1, (k2tog,k4) 12 times (61 sts) Work 3 rows in st-st
  • 5th row k1, (k2tog,k3) 12 times (49 sts) Work 3 rows in st-st
  • 9th row k1, (k2tog,k2) 12 times (37 sts) Work 3 rows in st-st.
  • 13th row k1, (k2tog,k1) 12 times (25 sts)
  • 14th row Purl
  • 15th row k1, (k2tog) 12 times (13 sts)
  • 16th row (p2tog) 6 times, p1 (7sts)
  • Break off yarn and thread through rem 7 sts.
  • Pull up tight and fasten off securely
