How to Know Right-Side From Wrong-Side – Knitting Know How

Ever confused knowing a right-side row to a wrong-side? Here we will explain the RS/WS row meanings and how to tell them apart. This is only applicable if you use the thumb method to cast on.

Your pattern may abbreviate either of the two to:

RS row – right-side row

WS row – wrong-side row

Right-side = tail on the right

Here is an example of a right-side row. The tail at the bottom of your work (the yarn leftover from the cast-on row) should fall to the right of your work. When knitting in stocking stitch, this is what the right-side of your work will look like. If your pattern tells you to end on a RS row, your final row would start with the tail on the right-hand side.

Wrong-side = tail on the left

Here is an example of a wrong-side row. This time, the tail of your work will fall on the left-hand side of your work. When knitting in stocking stitch, this is what the wrong-side of your work will look like. If your pattern tells you to end on a WS row, your final row would start with the tail on the left-hand side.
