Next up in our Knitting Know How series is how to cable. In this post we will demonstrate how to cable back and front.
Your pattern may instruct you to C6B or C6F, which means to cable 6 stitches back, or cable 6 stitches front. The number in the middle will determine how big your cable is, so for example if it says C4B or C4F, it means you will be cabling 4 stitches rather than 6 in our demonstration.

How to cable back
- Knit until the start of your cable. This is showing cable back (this example is C6B). Slip next 3 stitches onto cable needle.
- Hold cable needle at the back of your work.
- Leave cable needle behind work and knit the next 3 stitches from your left-hand needle.
- This is how it should look!
- Holding cable needle in your left hand, knit the 3 stitches from your cable needle onto your right-hand needle.
- This is how your work should look now.
How to cable front
- This is showing cable front (this example is C6F). Slip next 3 stitches onto cable needle and hold at the front of your work.
- Knit 3 from left-hand needle, then knit 3 from cable needle as before.
